Allianz ‚Deutsche Seehäfen‘ gegründet: Ein Schritt in die Zukunft der Hafenwirtschaft

Strategic Alliance for the Port Economy

In a significant step for the German port economy, eight central seaports and inland ports have united to form the „German Seaports“ alliance. Holger Banik, a representative of the port company Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts), emphasized that the upcoming transformation tasks can only be tackled through close cooperation with the federal and state governments. This merger sends a clear signal about the relevance of ports in national infrastructure.

Common Goals and Challenges

The alliance, which includes port companies such as Hamburg Port Authority, Bremenports, Rostock Port, Lübeck Port Authority, Brunsbüttel Ports, Seehafen Kiel, and Duisburger Hafen, aims to present a unified point of contact to policymakers. The challenges range from the energy transition to infrastructure modernization and the increasing demands for resilience and security. These aspects are crucial for the competitiveness of the locations and shareholder value.

Urgent Need for Action and Financial Requirements

Port operators are facing an enormous modernization need, estimated at around 15 billion euros. To address these challenges, the alliance calls for increased financial participation from the federal government, particularly for investments in energy, security, and infrastructure. These demands are significant not only for the port economy itself but also for the entire German economy, as ports play a key role in the supply chain.

Efficiency Gains through Faster Procedures

Another central aspect of the alliance is the demand for faster planning and approval processes. In times when the speed of innovation and flexibility are crucial, reducing bureaucratic hurdles for port operators could provide a substantial competitive advantage. More efficient processing could not only lower costs but also enhance the attractiveness of locations for investors.

Support from the Central Association

The Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS) has recognized the initiative as time-limited and explicitly supports it. Given the current challenges, decisive action is essential to secure the competitiveness of German ports and maximize shareholder value. The positions of the alliance will be presented for the first time on June 10 at the Hamburg State Representation in Berlin, providing an opportunity for investors to learn about future developments in the port economy.

The establishment of the „German Seaports“ alliance could thus not only be a response to the pressing challenges of the industry but also a significant step towards a future-proof port infrastructure in Germany.
