Capri-Sun strebt Rückkehr zu Plastikstrohhalmen an: Ein umstrittener Schritt
Capri-Sun and the Return to Plastic Straws
The Capri Sun Group Holding AG, headquartered in Switzerland with a significant base in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, has strongly advocated for the return of plastic straws in recent years. This comes despite strict EU regulations that have banned single-use plastic products like plastic straws since 2021. CEO Hans-Peter Wild recently expressed criticism of a failed petition that called for a return to plastic variants, emphasizing that the demand for paper straws „makes absolutely no sense.“
Capri-Sun produces in Eppelheim near Heidelberg and has received significant feedback from consumers since the introduction of paper straws. They report difficulties inserting the straws, which feel soft after prolonged use and leave an undesirable paper taste. Wild pointed out that the company has made several attempts to improve the paper straws to meet consumer needs.
Recyclability and Corporate Strategy
Wild emphasized the recyclability of the Capri-Sun drink pouch, which is 100 percent recyclable. He argued that 90 percent of the paper straws remain in the packaging when the drink pouch is empty, which could impair recycling efficiency. The company’s approach to manufacture the straws from the same material as the drink pouches, namely polypropylene, would offer a complete recycling option and could reduce the ecological footprint.
However, Capri-Sun’s ambitions to collect one million signatures for the return of plastic straws seem to have stalled. With less than 170,000 signatures collected, support for this initiative is limited. Environmental activists like Viola Wohlgemuth from the German Environmental Aid criticize the company’s efforts as „incomprehensible“ and a sign of a lack of environmental awareness.
Impact on Location and Shareholder Value
The discussion surrounding the return to plastic straws raises not only questions about environmental compatibility but also about Capri-Sun’s competitiveness in a changing market. While the company seeks to maximize shareholder value, negative public perception and pressure from environmental organizations could impair brand perception in the long run. Investors should closely monitor developments in this area, as regulatory measures and societal trends could be crucial for the company’s future positioning.
Overall, Capri-Sun faces the challenge of finding a balance between entrepreneurial freedom, innovation drive, and the growing expectations of consumers and regulators. The company’s next steps will be critical for its market position and acceptance among consumers.
