Elektroautos erobern den deutschen Markt: Ein Viertel der Neuzulassungen im Mai 2023

Electric Drive on the Rise

The latest figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority show that in May 2023, a quarter of all newly registered vehicles in Germany were equipped with pure electric drive. With a total of 59,969 new registrations for electric cars, an impressive growth of 39.3 percent compared to the same month last year was recorded. The share of these vehicles in total new registrations, which sum up to 239,448, is thus 25.0 percent.

Hybrid Drives Also Gaining Momentum

Hybrid vehicles are also showing a positive trend. A total of 95,466 new cars with hybrid drive were registered, corresponding to a share of 39.9 percent and an increase of 3.6 percent compared to the same month last year. Particularly noteworthy is the growth in plug-in hybrid vehicles, which can be charged both at home and at charging stations. Here, the increase is 10.9 percent, while the share of new registrations remains stable at 11.7 percent.

Decline in Traditional Drives

In contrast to electric and hybrid drives, gasoline vehicles are experiencing a decline. With 51,806 new registrations, a decrease of 23.7 percent is observed, bringing their share of new registrations down to just 21.6 percent. Diesel cars are also affected, with 30,547 registrations and a decline of 13 percent, corresponding to a share of 12.8 percent.

SUVs Remain the Most Popular Segment

The segment of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) continues to be the strongest in the market, with a share of 35.4 percent and an increase of 5.3 percent. Particularly noteworthy is the area of mini-vans, which, with an increase of 22.1 percent, accounts for a mere 0.6 percent share. The mid-size segment also shows robustness with an increase of 19.8 percent and a share of 9.1 percent.

Conclusion: A Turning Point for the Automotive Industry

These developments not only highlight the increasing acceptance of electric and hybrid vehicles but also a fundamental shift in the German automotive industry. Investors should closely monitor the ongoing transformation in the automotive sector, as the trend towards more sustainable drives could significantly influence growth and shareholder value in the coming years. The challenge for the industry will be to adapt to the new market conditions while maintaining competitiveness.
