The discovery of a drone equipped with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport has not only prompted a response from security authorities but also raises fundamental questions about the safety of aviation infrastructure. The Federal Prosecutor General has taken the lead in the investigations, underscoring the severity and potential implications of the incident.

An airport employee discovered the drone on Wednesday night and was fortunate enough to bring it down with a kick before worse could happen. According to information from the Saxony State Criminal Police, the aircraft was located near a Ukrainian Antonov AN-124 Condor, complicating the situation further. The Federal Police were able to defuse the explosive device, which consisted of the explosives Semtex and PETN, previously used in terrorist attacks.

Air Traffic and Security Measures

Despite the defusal, the impact on air traffic was significant. Operations on the northern runway were severely restricted on Thursday, while police conducted a large-scale search for another unidentified flying object that had collided with a DHL aircraft. The uncertainty regarding the potential threat to aviation has reignited discussions about security standards at airports.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a „new quality of danger“ and emphasized the need to strengthen security measures. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigations, as this constitutes a serious attack on transport and logistics infrastructure that could jeopardize Germany’s internal and external security.

Experts Warn of New Threats

Hartmut Fricke, an aviation expert from TU Dresden, sees this incident as a new dimension of threat to critical infrastructures. Unlike previous drone sightings, this is not just about collisions but poses a serious danger from explosive devices. This indicates that existing technologies for detecting such threats are inadequate and urgently need improvement.

Increase in Drone Sightings

The numbers speak for themselves: In the first half of 2026, 166 drone sightings were recorded at German airports, with Berlin Brandenburg and Frankfurt am Main reporting the most incidents. In Leipzig/Halle, 18 unauthorized flying objects were sighted, underscoring the urgency for effective protection. Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster emphasized that these often involve improper use by private pilots, but not in this case.

Calls for Better Protection

The incidents have prompted several interior ministers to call for better protection of airports. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul advocates for clear responsibilities and a swift clarification of who is authorized to intervene in emergencies. This is crucial to ensure Germany’s competitiveness and attractiveness as a location in the aviation sector and to strengthen investor confidence.

The Greens also called for a meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the necessary consequences. In a time when the security of infrastructure is at stake, it is essential that political decision-makers, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, are involved in the discussion.
