Migration Crisis in Ceuta

The migration crisis in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, which resulted in at least 72 deaths, is forcing EU interior ministers to engage in urgent discussions. In a video conference that also includes German Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), the question arises as to how the EU can more effectively protect its external borders.

Return of Migrants

Last week, up to 60,000 migrants temporarily reached the Spanish enclave from Morocco. This situation led to a critical debate within the EU, with the majority of heads of state and government questioning Spain’s migration policy. In response, the Spanish government accused other member states of exploiting the crisis for political purposes. According to the central government in Madrid, most migrants have since returned to Morocco.

Call for Unity

Prior to this important meeting, the EU Commission has called for maintaining cohesion within the Union and avoiding doubts about the newly introduced EU migration system. This system came into effect only seven weeks ago, and the recent events represent a stress test for the security of Europe’s external borders. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasized that Europe has initially passed this test, as no one was able to enter the Schengen Area.
