Tourismus in Thailand vor Songkran: Einbruch durch steigende Reisekosten
Decline in Bookings Before Songkran
In Thailand, where the New Year festival Songkran is traditionally considered peak season for tourism from April 13 to 15, booking numbers are sharply declining. Industry representatives report a significant drop in demand, attributed to the sharply increased travel costs. These price hikes are primarily a result of the energy crisis triggered by the Iran war.
Impact on Tourism
Songkran typically attracts millions of travelers who participate in the joyful water battles. However, this year the mood is subdued, as tour operators nationwide report cancellations. Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the Thai Hotel Association, expressed concern: „The longer fuel prices rise, the less people will travel,“ quotes the newspaper „The Nation.“ A significant decline in visitor numbers is particularly expected from Europe, further undermining the competitiveness of the Thai tourism sector.
Ko Samui as an Example of the Crisis
A particularly drastic example of the decline in bookings is the popular island of Ko Samui, which is highly favored by German tourists. Reports indicate that bookings there have dropped by about 50 percent. Ratchaporn Poolsawat, vice president of the Thai Tourism Association, stated that prices for ferries and flights have risen significantly, with international tickets becoming almost twice as expensive in some cases. Additionally, living costs, including food prices, have increased by at least 20 percent.
Government Responds with Austerity Measures
In light of the energy crisis, the Thai government has begun discussing possible austerity measures. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced plans to restrict gas station operating hours to reduce fuel consumption. This measure, which will affect the sale of gasoline and diesel during the night between 10 PM and 5 AM, will, however, only be implemented after the holidays to avoid further burdening travel during Songkran.
Regional Impact of the Iran War
The energy crisis has severely affected not only Thailand but also other Asian countries. Due to the lack of oil supplies and rising energy prices, several governments in the region have already implemented austerity measures. Even with the recently agreed ceasefire in the Iran war, it remains unclear when oil transports can pass through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz without disruption, further increasing uncertainty for investors and shareholders.
