US-Inflation über 4 Prozent: Auswirkungen auf den Kapitalmarkt und Anleger

Inflation Above 4 Percent: A Turning Point for the US Economy

The latest inflation figures from the US indicate that consumer prices rose by 4.2 percent year-on-year in May 2023. This marks the first increase above the 4 percent threshold in three years and is primarily driven by rising energy costs, significantly influenced by the ongoing conflict in Iran. While analysts had anticipated this rise, it nonetheless poses a challenge to economic stability.

Energy prices have increased by 23.5 percent compared to the previous year, with gasoline prices particularly notable, rising by about 40 percent. These developments raise questions about the competitiveness of the US economy, as rising energy costs not only fuel inflation but also increase operating expenses for businesses, which could ultimately impact shareholder value.

The core inflation rate, which excludes volatile prices for energy and food, also shows an increase of 2.9 percent year-on-year. This is a slight uptick compared to the 2.8 percent of the previous month. Thomas Gitzel, Chief Economist at VP Bank, points out that the rise in core inflation was only marginal. This could lead to a cooling of speculation regarding an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve.

The market’s reaction to these inflation data was initially subdued. The euro showed little movement against the US dollar, indicating a degree of stability in the foreign exchange market. However, the question remains how the US Federal Reserve will respond to these developments, particularly in light of a robust labor market.

Analyst Dirk Chlench from Landesbank Baden-Württemberg expresses the view that inflation may have reached its preliminary peak. Declining gas station prices in June could suggest that the annual inflation rate has surpassed its high point. This could provide the Fed with the leeway to refrain from further interest rate hikes, thereby preserving a certain degree of corporate freedom, which is significant for investors.

Overall, the situation remains tense, and it is crucial to monitor developments closely. The impact of inflation on competitiveness and future monetary policy will be critical for the strategic decisions of companies and investors. According to Eulerpool data, sustained inflation could diminish the attractiveness of the US as an investment location, potentially clouding the growth outlook in the long term.
