Verdi weitet Warnstreiks im Handel aus: Forderungen nach höheren Löhnen und Wertschätzung

Warning Strikes in Retail: A Signal of Discontent

The Verdi union has expanded its warning strikes in retail as well as in wholesale and foreign trade. Today and on Friday, businesses across all federal states are affected, underscoring the relevance of the union’s demands. These strike actions are a clear signal to employers that employees are seeking greater recognition and appreciation for their contributions.

In Kiel, around 200 retail employees gathered to make their voices heard. Silke Zimmer, a board member of Verdi, emphasized at the closing rally: „We are not the bargain basement of the nation.“ This statement highlights the growing dissatisfaction within the industry, which extends beyond mere monetary aspects. It concerns the fundamental recognition of the work employees perform and the assurance of a livelihood-sustaining income.

Demands for Fair Wages

The union is demanding a wage increase of seven percent or at least 225 euros per month, with a duration of twelve months. These demands are particularly relevant considering that nearly two-thirds of retail employees work part-time. Zimmer points out that many rely on additional hours to secure their livelihoods. This raises questions about the financial stability of workers and could, in the long run, impact Germany’s attractiveness as a location for skilled professionals.

In contrast, employers in wholesale and foreign trade are offering only a 3.4 percent increase, but with a duration of 24 months. In retail, the employers‘ offer includes an increase of merely two percent after six months, followed by 1.5 percent after another three months. These inadequate offers could not only lead to a real wage loss but also jeopardize the competitiveness of companies in an already challenging market environment.

Impact on the Market and Companies

Verdi has called for these nationwide warning strikes to represent the interests of more than five million employees in retail. Although the German Retail Association (HDE) has stated that no noticeable impact on customers is expected, the reality is that such strike actions can disrupt the internal operations of companies.

The current situation requires a rethink from employers to secure employee motivation and retention. According to Eulerpool data, fair compensation is not only a key factor for employee satisfaction but also for the long-term profitability of companies. Investors should closely monitor developments in this wage round, as they could have far-reaching implications for the entire retail industry.
