A Call for Active Participation

On Basic Law Day, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has urgently called on citizens in Germany to actively engage in the functioning of democracy. In an interview with the German Press Agency, he emphasized that the Basic Law is not only a legal foundation but a fundamental achievement for coexistence in Germany. Democracy requires more than just theoretical knowledge; it needs committed individuals who are willing to get involved and actively contribute.

The Basic Law, proclaimed on May 23, 1949, is regarded as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. Steinmeier has declared this anniversary as an „Honor Day“ to draw attention to the central values of freedom, the rule of law, and democracy. Under the motto „For you. For us. For all,“ this day is also intended to serve as a day of participation, focusing on volunteerism. The multitude of actions planned by municipalities, companies, associations, and individuals nationwide underscores the commitment of society.

Steinmeier expressed that it is a personal concern of his to anchor the birthday of the constitution more firmly in the general consciousness, beyond political circles. May 23 should be a reason to celebrate, through communal action and mutual support. In a time when the challenges for democracy are increasing, the active participation of citizens is crucial for the preservation and further development of our democratic values.
