Deutsche fordern wirtschaftliche Diversifizierung jenseits von China und den USA

Strengthening Economic Relations

A representative survey conducted by the polling institute Civey, commissioned by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, has revealed that an overwhelming majority of Germans are in favor of diversifying economic relations. 85 percent of respondents believe that Europe should expand its economic partnerships beyond the USA and China to reduce dependence on these two economic powers. Only five percent of the 5,000 respondents disagreed with this statement, while one in ten participants remained undecided.

Independence in Critical Sectors

The survey results also highlight that many Germans consider greater independence in certain economic sectors essential. This particularly concerns the sectors of energy, pharmaceuticals, and defense. 50 percent of respondents indicated that energy is a particularly important area for Europe’s independence. 45 percent prioritized pharmaceuticals, while 40 percent viewed the defense industry as crucial. Semiconductors and chips were identified by 32 percent as relevant for greater independence, and 20 percent deemed more European autonomy in artificial intelligence important.

Cost-Benefit Debate

However, the survey shows that opinions on the financial implications of such independence vary. When asked whether policymakers should be willing to accept higher short-term costs for businesses and consumers to achieve greater economic independence in the long term, 47 percent of respondents agreed. 33 percent disagreed with this view, while one in five participants remained undecided. This uncertainty could be significant for investors, as the potential costs for businesses and the associated impacts on competitiveness cannot be overlooked.

Conclusion

Overall, the survey indicates a strong desire for economic diversification and independence, which is accompanied by concerns about financial burdens. For investors, it is crucial to keep an eye on these developments, as they present both opportunities and risks for the European location and the competitiveness of companies. A careful consideration of costs and benefits will be essential in the coming years to secure shareholder value while promoting entrepreneurial freedom.
