Elektroautos im Aufwind: IEA-Studie zeigt Wachstumspotenzial durch geopolitische Faktoren

Growth in the Electric Car Market

The current analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights the dynamic development of the electric car market, showing that global sales could rise by 20 percent to over 20 million vehicles by 2025. This would mean that a quarter of all newly sold cars will be electric vehicles. Chinese manufacturers dominate the market, accounting for 60 percent of global sales, while European and North American car producers each contribute about 15 percent.

Germany as a Pioneer

In Germany, the largest European market for electric vehicles, a 50 percent increase in sales to 850,000 vehicles by 2025 is forecasted. This upswing is not only supported by tax incentives for electric company cars but also by the increasing availability of more affordable models. About 30 percent of cars sold in Germany will be electric vehicles by 2025, representing a slight decline compared to the 31 percent in 2022.

Forecasts for 2026

The IEA expects a further increase in global sales this year to about 23 million electric cars, making up nearly 30 percent of all vehicles sold. Geopolitical tensions, particularly the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as persistently high oil prices could further boost electric vehicle sales in the long term. Governments may introduce purchase bonuses and incentives to relieve the population and reduce dependence on oil imports.

Influence of Affordable E-Cars from China

A crucial factor in this development is the role of Chinese car manufacturers offering low-cost electric cars. This could significantly influence the decision of countries to introduce purchase bonuses. States that are heavily dependent on oil imports or lack their own automotive industry may resort to purchase incentives more quickly than countries with domestic production that must contend with cheaper imports from China.

Conclusion: Transformation in the Automotive Market

„Sales of electric cars reached new records in nearly 100 countries last year. The growing popularity of electric vehicles has initiated a significant transformation for automotive markets and the energy system as a whole,“ commented IEA Director Fatih Birol. With falling battery prices and potential political reactions to the current global energy crisis, the electric vehicle market is expected to continue gaining momentum. These developments are not only significant for the automotive industry but also for investors looking to recognize market opportunities in a changing economic environment.
