Wiener Aktienmarkt: ATX zeigt sich stabil trotz geopolitischer Unsicherheiten

Stability Despite Uncertainties

The Vienna stock market continued a phase of consolidation on Friday. The leading index ATX closed at 6,527.59 points, nearly at the level of the previous day, after reaching a record high of nearly 6,572 points on Thursday, but ultimately closed with losses. However, on a weekly basis, the index can report a strong gain of 4.3 percent, indicating a positive market sentiment.

Influence of the Banking Sector

The ATX Prime recorded a slight increase of 0.05 percent to 3,212.66 points before the weekend. A similar, albeit restrained, development was also observed in the European context. Trading activities were largely lackluster due to the holiday-induced quiet mode in the US markets, leading to below-average trading volumes. The significant expiration at the futures exchanges and the geopolitical developments in the Middle East had little impact on the Austrian stock market.

Geopolitical Tensions and Their Impact

The uncertainties following the framework agreement to end the Iran War continue to put pressure on the market. Planned talks between the US and Iran were abruptly canceled, temporarily boosting oil prices. This is set against the backdrop of new fighting between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, with recent US reports indicating a ceasefire between the conflicting parties. These geopolitical tensions could adversely affect the investment climate and location attractiveness in the long term.

Sectoral Developments

Ultimately, the ATX was supported by the heavyweights in the banking sector. Companies like Erste Group, Bawag, and RBI were able to gain up to 0.7 percent. In contrast, industrial and construction stocks suffered significant losses. Particularly, the shares of Voestalpine and Strabag lost 2.5 and 3.7 percent, respectively. The stock of AT&S initially continued its impressive record run but closed unchanged, which translates to a weekly price increase of over 46 percent.

Analyst Opinions and Price Targets

At Zumtobel, Erste Group confirmed its hold recommendation but lowered the price target from 5.4 to 4.8 euros. This adjustment is primarily due to lower profit forecasts reflecting weaker revenue development and higher restructuring costs. The shares lost 1.4 percent and closed at 4.34 euros. Such adjustments highlight how important it is for companies to adapt to changing market conditions to secure long-term shareholder value.
